ABOUT

About The Illuminated Word

The Illuminated Word is a free, interactive Bible reader and historical companion. It lets anyone open the scriptures in an illuminated, page-turning manuscript reader and read across four traditions: the King James Version, the Douay–Rheims Catholic Bible, the Eastern Orthodox Bible drawn from the Greek Septuagint, and the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo canon with books such as 1 Enoch and Jubilees.

Beyond the text, it surrounds scripture with the world that shaped it. A historical archive gathers the artifacts, inscriptions, and manuscripts that illuminate the biblical record; an interactive map pins the places of Scripture to the verses that name them; a manuscript library opens the scrolls, codices, and letters that carried the Word across the centuries; and a searchable index of the people of the Bible helps readers meet the figures behind the text. A verse search and topical guides help readers find any passage, while a members area offers studies, devotional journals, study groups, a verse of the day, and the ability to compare a single verse across all four editions.

Who it is for

It is built for everyone who wants to read and understand the Bible in its historical setting: students and teachers, families and study groups, the curious and the committed. The core reader, the search, and the historical companions are free and open to all, with no paywall standing between a reader and the text. A modest optional membership unlocks the deeper study tools and helps keep the reading room open for everyone.

Who builds it

The Illuminated Word is built and maintained by a small independent project dedicated to keeping scripture open, readable, and rooted in history. It is supported by a modest optional membership and the gifts of readers who want to keep the reading room free for all. All scripture text is drawn from public-domain sources, and every historical record links back to its source so readers can follow the trail themselves.
